• A new method to determine a lumbar spinal level intraoperatively was investigated.
A MRI can be marked preoperatively to identify the level of the iliac crests
with respect to the lumbar discs. Intraoperatively, the average height of
the iliac crests when seen on a lateral x-ray was found to be located at
the same disc level regardless of patient anatomy or x-ray technique. By
correlating the preoperatively marked MRI with the average intercrest point
seen on x-ray, wrong level lumbar spine surgery can be avoided.
2003 UC DAVIS MEDICAL CENTER SACRAMENTO, CA
• The modes of failure and indications for intervention of Less Invasive
Stabilization System (LISS) plates applied for distal femoral fractures
were reviewed. Two modes of failure exist: plate breakage and pull-off of
the plate from the femur. Further controlled studies on the outcomes of
LISS plates are needed.
2002-2003 UC DAVIS MEDICAL CENTER SACRAMENTO, CA
• The results of 46 patients who underwent anterior spinal fusion with BAK
cage placement by a single surgeon were evaluated to determine the results
of the procedure. At least a 22% revision rate and 22% complication rate
were found. 55% of patients had a poor outcome using Prolo scores and 57%
were at least severely disabled as measured by the Oswestry scoring system.

• Outcome rating scales in foot and ankle surgery were examined to determine
if any scales exist that are valid, reliable, and responsive. Currently,
there is no outcome system for foot and ankle problems that is recognized
as a gold-standard, proven to be reliable, valid, or responsive for a variety
of foot problems.
1996-1997 NEW ENGLAND MEDICAL CENTER BOSTON, MA
• Survival, quality of life, and functional ability outcomes of chronically
critically ill patients were studied. Between 1990 and 1996, over thirty-six
million dollars were spent to care for 97 patients who spent at least 7
days in a New England Medical Center intensive care unit and were then directly
discharged to an extended care facility. Within one year, only 11 patients
returned home, spontaneously ventilating, with good functionality, and at
least a fair quality of life.
